March and his two faces

“Keep wood for March,
so not to burn the fence-poles”  is a known Greek proverb.
But what made March so unpredictable?  …

The smart March and the naive February

Once upon a time there was an old lady, kyra Galini. She had a few goats and she hoped to breed baby goats, to sell them in order to live with the money they would fetch. So it happened. The goats gave birth to new goats, and the young goats cheered happily. March came and it was almost at its end and everything was perfect and without a heavy winter. The old lady, full of joy of the fact that everything seemed to go so easy, was deceived and said very silly:

“Farewell old-March … I do not need you any more, the warm April comes …”

Of course, March was very jealous of his blond brother, who seemed to be so welcome by everybody unlike him. That’s why he decided to punish kyra Galini. In the evening, when he saw his brother February (who still had all his days), he filled him up with wine and asked him for two days; two of the worst. February, dizzy by the wine, gave them, and March brought so much hail and cold that the old lady had no place to hide.

When March ended his revenge, he turned back, and February asked his days back. Of course, March refused saying in a simple tone: “Which days? Those days are not mine… they are the old lady’s days …”

Since then, February has stayed with 28 days, and we still have the fear of March with his awkward weather.
